PROPOSED SECURE VOTING APP

The app will enable citizens to engage with, learn about and vote on local, national and international issues. The aim is to empower people to take back control of a system that no longer represents them and allow them to exercise their right to say how their money is spent.

For councils and constituencies, the app will provide survey tools to generate grassroots policy suggestions as well as polling tools that trigger petitions leading to debates in councils and Parliament.

The app will be a key tool for independent councillors and MPs: the future of British politics. It will provide information on the issues their constituents care most about in order of importance and connect them as an alliance whereby they can choose which issues to vote on together.

The idea is to test this in the UK and then roll-out a model for every other Democracy worldwide.

Risks:

Traditional electoral systems have been under attack and have failed those they represent, as seen in the Brexit referendum, the US 2016 presidential election, Brazil, Kenya and elsewhere. The mechanisms weaponised by bad actors to derail democracy include:

  • Disinformation - information that is false, and the person who is disseminating it knows it is false. It is a deliberate, intentional lie, and points to people being actively disinformed by malicious actors.

  • Misinformation - information that is false, but the person who is disseminating it believes that it is true.

  • Mal-information - information that is based on reality but it is used to inflict harm on a person, organisation or country.

Countermeasures:

While technology has been used maliciously against us, it also provides a solution to secure our democracies and electoral processes. Such tools and techniques include:

  • Open-source intelligence (OSINT) — the practice of gathering and analysing publicly available information to answer questions, make decisions, or assess threats.

  • Blockchain security — to prevent tampering.

  • Linguistic models, monitoring stations, & AI-powered tools — to detect disinformation, misinformation and mal-information.
